Do you wonder if 401k's are a smart idea?

Your money can go with you, job to job

One of the reasons why plans like 401(k)s have become so popular is that they are portable: generally speaking, you can take them from job to job (with some exceptions). If you decide to change jobs, you have three options for your contributions: You can roll your eligible rollover assets to and from 401(k), 403(b) and governmental 457(b) plans, provided your new employer's plan accepts these rollovers.

Best 401K Funds Tips:

After-tax contributions are quite different from pre-tax contributions. If an employee elects to make after-tax contributions, the money comes out of net pay (i.e., after taxes have been deducted). While it doesn't help the employee's current tax situation, funds that were contributed on an after-tax basis may be easier to withdraw since they are not subject to the strict IRS rules which apply to pre-tax contributions. When distributions are begun (see below), the employee pays no tax on the portion of the distribution attributed to after-tax contributions, but does have to pay tax on any gains.

Terms - Definitions:

Net Asset Value (NAV): The per share market value (price) of a mutual fund; in general, the price offered to purchase one share of the mutual fund. The NAV in most cases is calculated b including the closing day's prices of all securities held in a particular fund, plus all other assets owned by the fund (including cash), subtracting all liabilities of the fund, and then dividing the sum by all the outstanding shares of the fund on that given day. If the fund is a no-load fund, then the offering per share price for the fund and the NAV per share will be the same.

Back-End Load: The sales charges assessed when the investor removes money from the investment. Generally declines with the time the investors own the shares. Usually starts out at 6% for the first year and gets smaller each year thereafter until it reaches zero (usually in the sixth or seventh year of owning the investment). Also called a deferred load, deferred sales charge or exit charge. Back-end loads are used primarily to pay a commission to the broker/dealer who sold the fund to the investor. Often coupled with 12b-1 fees.

Rules you need to know about 401(k):

401k Rules Regarding Loans:
Not all 401k plans allow you to borrow from your 401k plan. And if itis allowed, the most you can borrow is the lesser of 50% of your vestedbalance or $50,000.

* You have to repay your loan in 5 years, unless the loan isused to purchase your primary residence.
* The interest you pay on your loan is subject to doubletaxation---you pay the interest with after-tax money and it issubjected to taxes when you eventually withdraw it.
* When you leave your company, you may have to pay back theoutstanding balance in full. Otherwise, the outstanding amount will besubject to a possible 10% early withdrawal penalty.
* If you default on your loan, the outstanding balance is also subject to a possible 10% early withdrawal penalty.

401 k explained:

A 401(k) plan is a retirement savings plan that is funded by employee contributions and (often) matching contributions from the employer. The major attraction of these plans is that the contributions are taken from pre-tax salary, and the funds grow tax-free until withdrawn. Also, the plans are (to some extent) self-directed, and they are portable; more about both topics later. Both for-profit and many types of tax-exempt organizations can establish these plans for their employees.
