Note that this paragraph doesn't mention "retire" because the person's status after leaving service with the company that has the 401(k) doesn't seem to be relevant.

her life expectancy or over the joint life expectancy of the participant and the
designated beneficiary (or over a shorter period).

plan. The plan document must provide that these rules override any inconsistent
distribution options previously offered.
